NJ Task Force on Animals

The 183 page report is complete by the Animal Welfare Task Force, created by Governor McGreevey.

Everyone who cares about animals should read the recommendations of this report and contact your local state representatives and the in coming acting Governor, Dick Codey, to voice your opinions and feelings. One of the main courses of action being advised is to dissolve the SPCA and turn over the responsibilities of animal control to local municipal police departments which would be not only a mistake since the police already have enough to address, but it would make the animal issues of abuse the least of their concern. This would mean any call reporting a cruelty case, would likely result in the animal(s) in questions condition to be either beyond saving if not already expired by the time the police were able to survey the situation.

The dissolution of the SPCA is not the answer as with any authoritative position there are problems and many times cases of incompetence or understaffing. The reality is that most of us do the best we can with the circumstances at hand and to hold everyone at fault, is a fault in itself.

You can read the recommendations by going to http://www.go.philly.com/animalwelfare
